Magnesium: The success stories

Our article on magnesium in the last issue of Facts are Facts provoked a massive response. Read here just a few of the success stories sent in by readers who felt the benefits for themselves, and remind yourselves of the essential functions performed by magnesium in the body.

The author of the article in the last issue, Hans Gilgen, was inundated with calls from Facts are Facts readers eager to share their experiences. Here he provides a few particularly impressive, thought-provoking cases:

Mrs. B. R. from Bern in Switzerland reports: “As a six-year-old I had an operation to straighten out my twisted feet, which wasn’t a complete success. I still can’t trust my feet to hit a fixed point properly. Even today—about 50 years later—I literally feel like I’m “off track”. Shortly after the operation, I developed symptoms of cerebral paralysis. I’ve been suffering from multiple sclerosis for 30 years and up to now was only able to move about on crutches. My intestines weren’t working properly: I only had a bowel movement once every day or two and even that was painful. I had blemished skin and was in a lot of pain.

After taking magnesium chloride for four weeks, I started to notice the difference: I can now cover greater distances using a stick, and shorter distances without any aid at all. My bowels are working again; I can pass stools four to five times a day without problem and with no sign of diarrhea. The pressure in my stomach has eased; my skin is fine-pored, smooth and pure. My eyes are shining again and I can also see more clearly.

My physiotherapist was amazed at the fact that I could do exercises that I hadn’t been able to do for several years. After taking Vitamin B1 and B6 in fat-soluble form (4 tablets on the first day, 3 on the second, 2 on the third and then 1 tablet a day after that) the inflammation disappeared and the pain fell to a bearable level. I feel better than I have in years. I even gave my budgies magnesium chloride in their water and the result is clear for all to see—their feathers look like they’ve been freshly polished!”

Mrs. G. T. from Aeschlen in Switzerland tells us of ganglia that first went blue within one week, then got smaller and after another two weeks went back to their normal colour. Six weeks later they could hardly be seen. A burning sensation in her left wrist also disappeared as quickly as the creaking in her left knee. After eight weeks, she feels considerably more supple and agile.

Mr. M. B. from Wabern in Switzerland is crippled from the hip up as a result of a malignant tumour on his spine, suffers pain throughout his body and has difficulty with his digestion. First he had a tumour on his prostate (which was eradicated), a tumour on his bladder, and later tumours on his ribs and a tumour on his spine that pressed on the marrow and made it die off.

With the help of magnesium chloride, which he took for four months together with a fat-soluble Vitamin-B complex, his condition has improved so much that today he feels considerably better. The pain is now maintained at tolerable limits. “My life is worth living again and I hope I can enjoy a few more years of it!” were his very words when we spoke to him last time on the phone. He has also been taking one tablet containing 100 milligrams of Vitamin B1 and B6 twice a day in addition to magnesium chloride.

Mrs. W. R. from Erlinsbach in Switzerland, who has been taking magnesium and fat-soluble Vitamin B for the past few weeks, writes: “Many thanks for the fat-soluble Vitamin B1 and B6—it really helps. The pain is at an all-time low, and I’ve had that for 12 years. I am incredibly grateful. Life is so much happier and more enjoyable!”

A teacher from Osnabrück in Germany tells us on the phone: “I got your number indirectly just so that I could tell you about my incredible improvement: two weeks before Easter, my lessons (for Years 1 and 2 at primary school) were really difficult. I was anxious and overwhelmed and often trembled slightly. In other words: I was about to burn out. I hoped my kids wouldn’t notice, but at the same time I knew that children that age can sense uncertainty and react accordingly—and kids can be cruel. Three weeks after starting to take magnesium chloride, I’m up there in front of my class steady as a rock again—nothing can shake me!”

And lastly, one family from the Rhine Valley in Switzerland didn’t just want to take magnesium chloride themselves—they also gave it to their cows! The farm is on magnesium-depleted soil; a former moor with a relatively high pH value. Before, the cows would often stand on the meadow lethargically, hardly moving, and would actually shiver even though there was no way they could be cold. The vet diagnosed a magnesium deficiency. Now after treatment they are already doing a lot better.

How Magnesium does the Body all Sorts of Good

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 different functions in the human body. The most important of these are:

1. Muscle Relaxation
Calcium is responsible for contracting the muscles (systole); magnesium for relaxing them (diastole). When the body has enough magnesium, it will rarely experience any sore, stiff muscles.

For the heart, a lack of magnesium means a cramping, uneasy feeling and anxiety (angina pectoris) as well as an increased risk of heart attack. Calcium contracts the heart muscle while magnesium relaxes it. Irregular heartbeats are often a consequence of a deficiency. It is even thought that in certain blockages to the coronary arteries, which look strangulated, stress and a lack of magnesium could cause a heart attack. High blood pressure has much to do with poor muscle relaxation around the arteries.

Fear can choke the throat when there is a lack of magnesium. It can also cause arm and leg muscles to cramp so severely that even the tendons are overstretched.

Magnesium is important for the blood vessels, mainly the arteries, so that the muscles responsible for transporting blood do not cramp up, which could otherwise lead to dangerous blockages. Stomach, liver, gall bladder and kidneys are unable to relax without magnesium and in this case will not perform optimally. The person then feels tired and experiences cramping.

2. Immune System
A magnesium deficiency will severely weaken the defence system. The white blood cells (leukocytes) decrease in number, while circulation in the feet and nasal mucosa is reduced, which raises the risk of catching a cold or flu. As we age, our powers of defence are reduced but can be considerably improved with the help of magnesium. It strengthens the immune system and enables more antibodies to be formed.

3. Generating Energy
Magnesium is responsible for generating energy from fat, carbohydrates and proteins. This is just one example of the 300 metabolic processes for which magnesium is essential: blood sugar (glucose) is transported via the blood to a muscle cell and absorbed there. Glucose phosphate is made from glucose by the enzyme Hexokinase ATP and magnesium. Some of this glucose phosphate is required in the cells, while some is processed to form other products. It is important to realise that a lack of magnesium means that lots of essential processes either happen too slowly, or not at all.1

4. Formation of Bone and Cartilage...
...as well as joint fluid. Contrary to the opinion of many experts, Prof. Bergasa has proven in thousands of cases that ganglia will disappear, while joints, cartilage, intervertebral discs and bones can renew themselves.

Over the last ten years, Hans Gilgen has also had the chance to witness how many people suffering unbearable pain, wholly dependent on morphine, Cortisone and other pain-killers, were able to live a normal life again within just a few months simply by changing their diet and taking additional magnesium; people who were soon able to do their own housework or even go back to work.

Bones and cartilage take two years to renew (total regeneration of the entire tissue), while the liver needs just eight days. For arthrosis, one needs a bit of patience as it is not something that just crops up in a few days. It is important to remember that your body is able to recover bone cells if the necessary measures are taken, so don’t lose patience too quickly!

Regeneration and material exchange of bones and cartilage cells occurs mainly at night. It is therefore important to consume enough protein in the evening, since not enough collagen can otherwise be formed to regenerate the bones.

5. Strengthening the Nerves
Both sick and healthy people agree that after taking magnesium they:

  • feel better
  • often have a different view of the world
  • enjoy life more
  • no longer feel depressed or sad
  • are less tired and
  • are not afraid any more, but
  • look confidently to the future.

6. The Most Important Function...
...of all is magnesium’s role in cell division. When values of this mineral are below 10 mmol (1 mol = 24.3mg and 1000 mmol = 1 mol) in cell fluid, only degenerated cells i.e. cancer cells emerge instead of healthy reproductions of the old cells. A constant supply of magnesium is therefore important every single day, because cells cannot make healthy copies without it.

In addition to this, magnesium is vital for around 300 other important bodily functions—but unfortunately there is not room in this article to discuss them all.

The Three Biggest Magnesium Killers

1. Alcohol: Even a decilitre of wine will eliminate almost half of a carefully prepared small glass of magnesium chloride. An alcoholic therefore cannot absorb as much magnesium chloride as is required to protect against the emergence of degenerated cells.

2. Smoking: Nicotine kills magnesium. If you smoke, you will have little idea of the havoc being wreaked in your body.

3. Stress: A common evil of modern society. Stress at the office, road rage, trouble in the family: every stressful situation burns up additional magnesium.

Other causes of a deficiency (and therefore requiring a higher dosage) are: disease, particularly inflammations, prolonged fever.

As we age, our requirement increases because our immune system makes greater demands on magnesium. An increased need also results from taking medicines such as Cortisone or antibiotics and psychotherapeutic drugs; any kind of diet, bulimia and operations, particularly narcosis; in pregnancy, especially when there is vomiting; when taking hormones of any kind; this also goes for the pill.
